The history of the game

To know how this variant of classic poker arose, we must go back to the beginning of the 20th century. There is not much evidence to determine dates for this game, however, there are some papers. One of them takes us to the city of Robstown, Texas. Through the discovery of a record where the name of Texas Hold’em is mentioned as a game of the time.

For this reason, this small town is considered the cradle of this famous variant of poker. It was only a matter of time before this game spread throughout Texas. Although it would not be until 1967 that this form of the game would become known outside that state.

Thanks to players such as Doyle Branson, Amarillo Slim, and Crandell Addington, this variation reached Las Vegas. It took a few years for Texas Hold’em to become known in Las Vegas.

Texas Hold’em competitions

In 1970, the history of this game and of poker in general changed. All due to the creation of the World Series by Benny Binion and his son. They acquired the rights of the Gambling Fraternity Convention and that allowed it to change its name.

The first edition of this competition was in that same year and Johnny Moss was the winner. Texas Hold’em thus became the main game, in its no-limit form. This was due to the suggestion of a journalist.

The World Series of Poker did not have many participants in its first years of life. Despite being held every year, the number of competitors who showed up was small. The interest in this variant changed in the 1980s, when it was already common outside Las Vegas.

Its popularity

Doyle Brunson was the first to write a book about Texas Hold’em, in order to contribute to the promotion of this game. The book presented a series of strategies to win in this variant, entitled: Super System. This book was published in 1978 and changed the way this game was viewed at the time.

Al Alvarez was also another to publish a book related to this game, which is entitled: The biggest game in town. This work is a testimonial account of the 1981 World Series of Poker.

The interest in Texas Hold’em increased after the year 2000, with the release of the movie “Rounders”. Another milestone was the broadcast of the 2003 World Series of Poker on the sports network, ESPN. Although all previous series were televised, they had never reached such a high level of broadcasting.
